Apple Releases Mac Mini M6 and Mac Studio M5 Ultra

Both feature the latest chips as well as performance improvements focused on creating, running, and refining artificial intelligence (AI) models locally without the internet.
The launch demonstrates the increasingly strategic position of desktop computers for Apple. Macs are now one of the choices for developers and researchers who want to run AI agents and large language models (LLMs) without relying entirely on cloud services.
Some developers using software such as OpenClaw choose the Mac mini specifically to run AI agents. Meanwhile, the Mac Studio is widely used for experiments involving the training and deployment of local AI models that require greater performance and memory capacity.
Apple relies on the Neural Engine in its chips to accelerate AI processing. The company also uses a unified memory architecture that allows the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine to access the same pool of memory. This approach helps reduce data-transfer bottlenecks when the computer runs large AI models.
With these new frameworks and chips, developers can run and fine-tune large AI models locally on Mac.
Mac Mini Becomes the First Apple Computer with the M6 Chip
The latest Mac mini is available with M6 and M5 Pro chips. The device is the first Apple computer to use the M6 generation chip.
The M6 chip is manufactured using a 2-nanometer fabrication process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The smaller fabrication technology allows Apple to increase the number of transistors while pursuing better performance and power efficiency.
The previous generation of Mac mini was available with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. According to Apple, the Mac mini with M5 Pro can process LLM commands or prompts up to 8.5 times faster than the previous-generation Mac mini Pro.
The improvement was accompanied by a price increase. The latest Mac mini starts at $899 USD, up $100 USD from the previous generation's price. Apple had raised the device's base price from $599 USD in the summer due to rising memory component costs.
Mac Studio Can Combine Memory for Trillion-Parameter ModelsApple has also updated the Mac Studio. It is now the most powerful Mac computer without a built-in display, since the company stopped selling the Mac Pro in early 2026.
Some Mac Studio configurations use the M5 Max chip. Apple claims that the chip can run LLMs nearly four times faster than its predecessor.
Apple also offers a configuration with the M5 Ultra, the most powerful chip in the company's portfolio at present. Several M5 Ultra-powered Mac Studio units can be connected to work as a single system and combine their memory capacity.
That configuration is designed to run frontier AI models at a scale of up to one trillion parameters. This capability makes the Mac Studio increasingly geared toward researchers, AI developers, and companies that want to process large models on local infrastructure.
The Mac Studio with M5 Max starts at $2,499 USD, the same as the previous generation. Meanwhile, the M5 Ultra version starts at $5,499 USD.
The price of the Ultra model has increased from the previous generation, which was offered starting at $5,299 USD. The previous device still uses the M3 Ultra, two generations behind the latest M5 Ultra chip.
Apple will open pre-orders for the new Mac mini and Mac Studio starting August 25, 2026. Both computers are scheduled to begin shipping to consumers on September 22, 2026.
